CHECK LIST OF INSTRUCTIONS

 

INDIVIDUALLY OR WITH A PARTNER

____ 1) Brainstorm several significant issues from the period 1914 - 1945.

____ 2) Select an issue and pose several (5-6) significant questions related to the issue.

____ 3) Explain why the issue is important to understand.

____ 4) Explain why the question is significant in understanding the historical period.

____ 5) Choose one of the questions and develop some possible approaches to answering the question. (Remember the question cannot be so narrow that all the documents answer the question)

____ 6) Select 7 - 9 documents that (1) illustrate some aspect of the issue (2) add insight or outside information to the issue (3) challenge or call into question traditional or usual interpretations about the issue.  Then identify the source of the document.  [Text documents cannot be longer than 200 words]

____ 7) The documents which you select must include, but not limited to, at least:

        ____ one personal document

        ____ one political document

        ____ one public record document

____ 8) All Documents must be directly related to the question and usable in some way to answer the question.  The selected documents do not include all the information needed to answer the question. (The documents are like clues to help with the answer)

____ C) A list of relevant outside information you would expect students to use in answering the question.

____ D) A key of expected responses.  Make your own scoring rubric on a scale of 9 to 1.  Make sure your key allows students to follow a variety of approaches to the question.

IV. The assignment is worth 300 points.

V. The DBQ will be evaluated on originality, accuracy of the question, and how well you follow the instructions set forth.

VI. Be sure to include all parts of the check list (including the check list) when you turn in your final product.

 

 

Possible Questions:

 

1.       Historians have generally described the 1920s and early 1930s as a period of isolationism. Assess the validity of this generalization using the documents and your knowledge of U S History.

2.       American foreign policy leading up to involvement in the Second World War was greatly influenced by the continuing debate over the “lessons” of the 1914-1929 period. Assess the validity of this statement by considering the issues of American foreign policy in the period from 1914 to 1929 and the appropriateness of these “lessons” to the period from 1930 to 1941.

3.       Compare and contrast the attitudes of Americans toward war in 1937-1941 with the attitudes of  1914-1917.

4.       Some historians have described the 1920s as a “watershed” in American history, the point where “modern America” began. To what extent do you agree with this characterization?

5.       The 1920's were a period of tension between new and changing attitudes on the one hand and traditional values and nostalgia on the other. What led to the tension between old and new AND in what ways was the tension manifested?

6.       United States foreign policy during the period 1930-1941 was the master of events rather than the servant of events historians have made it. Assess the validity of this statement.

7.       How and for what reasons did United States foreign policy change between 1920 and 1941 ? Use the documents and your knowledge of the period 1920-1941 to construct your response.

8.       It is often claimed that the major American wars of the last 150 years have resulted in the most important social and political gains of minorities and women. Evaluate this statement with regard to the experience of minorities and women during World War II. Use evidence from the documents and your knowledge of the period from 1941 to 1945 to compose your answer.

9.       Analyze the responses of Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration to the problems of the Great Depression How effective were these responses? How did they change the role of the federal government?  Use the documents and your knowledge of the period 1929-1941 to construct your essay.

10.   “World War I had a revolutionary impact on the United States.” Assess the validity of this statement. Compare and contrast how the Presidencies of Woodrow Wilson and Abraham Lincoln dealt with the challenges of both war and peace.
